MEET CALCONNECT

An Introduction to The Calendaring and Scheduling Consortium

CalConnect – The Calendaring and Scheduling Consortium – invites you to an afternoon invitational event to introduct CalConnect, and how it is working to achieve true interoperable calendaring and scheduling. The goals of this meeting are twofold: first, to introduce you to CalConnect and give you an overview of what we do; second, to give you enough information to be able to decide if participation in CalConnect would be beneficial to your organization.

SCHEDULE AND LOCATION

Friday, November 7, 1300-1600, Palace Hotel, Panská 12, 1121 Prague 1, Czech Republic
Monday, November 10, 1300-1600, The Hubworking Centre, 5 Wormwood Street, London EC2M 1RQ, United Kingdom

Each event will be preceded by a light buffet lunch at 12:15 and followed an informal reception at 16:00

REGISTRATION

There is no charge for this event but we do request that you register in advance so we know the number of guests to expect.

To register, please visit Meet CalConnect Event Registraton, e-mail Dave.Thewlis@calconnect.org, or call +1 707 840 9391. We will need to know which event you will attend, and the number of people attending from your organization.

WHO SHOULD COME?

This introductory session is intended for individuals or organizations who are involved in calendaring and scheduling as vendors, developers, or customers. Technical topics and issues may be discussed in the context of CalConnect activities, current problems facing calendaring and scheduling implementations, or directions for the standards and implemenations, but the event is not inherently technical in nature and is intended both for decision makers and decision implementors.

PROGRAM AND SPEAKERS

Introduction to CalConnect

This session will introduce CalConnect, The Calendaring and Scheduling Consortium, and provide an overview of our history, membership, activities, and accomplishments. We will also briefly review of calendaring-related standards, and why they are important, and look into the CalConnect crystal ball at the future of calendaring and scheduling, and CalConnect itself.

– Dave Thewlis, Executive Director, The Calendaring and Scheduling Consortium

Interoperability Testing and Standards Development

CalConnect conducts regularly-scheduled interoperability test events for calendaring servers and clients, and unique mobile calendaring interoperability test events for mobile calendaring. CalConnect interoperability test events are open to members and non-members alike. CalConnect has recently implemented a new Virtual Test Lab, open to participants to conduct ad hoc interoperability testing. The speaker manages these interoperability test events for CalConnect, and will discuss the testing events, and how interoperability testing furthers standards development and accelerates the development of interoperable implementations. Attending organizations who have participated in CalConnect interoperability test events will be asked to comment upon their experiences and the value the testing provided to them.

– Patricia Egen, Owner, Patricia Egen Consulting, Interoperability Test Event Manager for CalConnect

CalConnect Technical Committees

This session will provide a deeper look at two CalConnect Technical Committees:
  • TC MOBILE focuses on Mobile Calendaring and its unique needs and requirements imposed on calendaring systems. TC MOBILE organized and is coordinating the Mobile Calendaring Interoperability Test Event in Plzen, Czech Republic, just prior to this event.
  • TC iSCHEDULE is developing the iSCHEDULE calendar scheduling protocol which will allow similar and dissimilar calendaring systems to schedule and exchange calendar information with one another.
This session will examine the charters of the committees, their membership, their work products, and future plans.

– Chris Dudding, Symbian Ltd., Chair, TC MOBILE
– Mattias Amnefelt, Stockholm University, TC iSCHEDULE

CalConnect and Open Source

This presentation will focus on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), developers of the Bedework calendaring system. The speaker will discuss Bedework, an open source, Java-based implementation of CalDAV, the new standard for Calendar servers, and the relationship between CalConnect and the open source movement. He will also look at RPI's reasons for getting involved in CalConnect, and the benefits which they have enjoyed from active participation in CalConnect, both as calendar developers and as a research university.

– Gary Schwartz, Director Communications & Middleware Technologies, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

CalConnect from a Member Perspective

Representatives of CalConnect members will discuss the reasons their organizations joined CalConnect, the benefits they receive from their membership, and especially the benefits from active participation in CalConnect Technical Committees' work in the evolution of calendaring and scheduling standards and implementations.

– Mattias Amnefelt, Stockholm University
– Tomas Hnetila, Kerio Technologies
– Gary Schwartz, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
– To Be Announced

General Question and Answer Session

The speakers and other CalConnect participants in attendance will participate in an open question and answer session.

Reception

The event will be followed by a reception for those who can stay.
