CalConnect allows observers at both CalConnect Conferences and at Interoperability Test Events/Developers Forums.
At CalConnect Conferences, observers are individuals from an organization which is not a member of the Consortium, attending to determine whether involvement in CalConnect is valuable enough to their organization to join.
At Test Events, observers are individuals from members or non-members, who wish to attend the testing either to prepare themselves for participation in a future test event by becoming familiar with the processes, interaction and preparation, or as a way of better understanding the interoperability interactions between testing vendors, products and implementations.
Generally, an organization can only attend one CalConnect Conference as an Observer, and one test Event as an Observer. If an organization wishes to attend both as an observer it is welcome to do so during the same CalConnect week, but there is no requirement to do so.
Information about Previous CalConnect Events
Information about each CalConnect Conference and Test Event is published shortly after each event in event reports posted to the CalConnect website. See Event Reports for an index of these reports. The reports cover what went on at the Conference and Test Event, what the current work is in the Technical Committees, and who particiapted and what was tested or discussed (broadly) at the Test Event.
For some time in the past, CalConnect published a newsletter called CalConnect Minutes after each event, containing much the same information. You can find copies of the newsletters at CalConnect Minutes. The newsletter ceased publication in 2012.
Observers at a CalConnect Conference
Attendance and participation at a CalConnect Conference is generally limited to representatives of members of the Consortium. However, a non-member interested in joining CalConnec may register one or more representatives to attend a single Conference on its behalf as observers.
Conference observers pay the same registration fee as member representatives and are welcome to participate in all CalConnect activities at the Conference, but will not be able to vote, nor to continue involvement after the Conference unless their organization joins CalConnect.
Conference Observers are required to abide by the relevant clauses of the Consortium Membership Agreement and member representative Code of Conduct while attending the Conference and with respect to any actions resulting from the Conference in the future. The individual registering for the Conference as an observer must acknowledge that he or she, and any other individuals being registered at the same time, have read the terms and conditions indicated above and agrees to abide by them.
Observers at an Interoperability Test Event and Developers Forum
Participation in Test Events is open to both members of CalConnect and to non-members, although non-members pay an additional charge on the participation fee. However, it is also possible for representatives from both members and non-members to attend a single test event as observers. This option is intended to give organizations who are considering participating in the test events an opportunity to be exposed to them in advance, in order to better understand what happens at the events and how to prepare for them in order to make maximum use of the event.
Test Event observers pay a registration fee set well under the participation fee but high enough to recover the costs to CalConnect of their presence. Observers at a test event may not participate in the testing (although they can participate in the discussions at the Developers Forum portion), or disturb the participants during testing.
Test Event observers are required to abide by the relevant clauses of the Consortium Membership Agreement and member representative Code of Conduct while attending the test event and with respect to any actions resulting from the event in the future. Event observers are also required to agree to and abide by the Interoperability Test Event Confidentiality Agreement and the Conduct of Observers at CalConnect Interoperability Test Events.
The individual registering for the test event as an observer must acknowledge that he or she, and any other individuals being registered at the same time, has read the terms and conditions indicated above and agrees to abide by them.
