The CalConnect Standards Registry gets a new look

The CalConnect Standards Registry is the official home for all CalConnect deliverables — standards, specifications, reports, directives, and other documents that define how calendar and scheduling systems interoperate. Today we’re excited to announce that the Standards Registry has been completely redesigned with a modern, user-friendly interface that makes it easier than ever to discover, browse, and access CalConnect documents.

What’s new

The redesigned Standards Registry brings significant improvements to how users interact with CalConnect’s document library:

  • Interactive dashboard — The new home page provides a clear overview of all 11 document categories, with live counts and descriptions. You can see at a glance what’s available and jump directly to the category you need.

  • Global search — A single search bar on the home page lets you search across all documents by title or identifier. Results appear instantly as you type. Press / from any page to focus the search.

  • Smart filtering and sorting — Each document category page now features stage-based filter tabs, text search, and multiple sort options (by identifier, date, or title). Toggle between card and compact views — your preferences are remembered between visits.

  • Unified design — The Registry now shares the same visual language as calconnect.org and devguide.calconnect.org, running on the shared jekyll-calconnect-theme gem. Future theme improvements will benefit all CalConnect sites simultaneously.

  • Dark mode — Just like the main CalConnect site and DevGuide, the Standards Registry now supports dark mode. Toggle between light and dark themes to suit your preference.

  • Mobile-friendly — The entire site is fully responsive and works comfortably on phones and tablets, with a collapsible navigation menu and touch-friendly cards.

  • Improved navigation — A redesigned header groups the most common document categories in the primary navigation, with additional categories accessible via a dropdown. A reorganized footer provides quick access to all sections.

Under the hood

Beyond the visible changes, the site has been rebuilt on a modernized infrastructure:

  • Release-based builds — The site now fetches pre-built document artifacts from GitHub Releases instead of compiling every document from source on each build. This reduced CI build times from over 30 minutes to under 2 minutes.

  • Single-pipeline architecture — All pages now go through a single Jekyll build pipeline with Vite-powered CSS and JavaScript, replacing the previous dual rendering system.

  • Relaton Ruby API — Bibliographic data is now indexed using the Relaton Ruby API directly, eliminating the need for Docker containers in the CI pipeline.

These changes make the site faster to build, easier to maintain, and simpler to extend as CalConnect’s document library grows.
